This is probably the ultimate hostess book, where she will be able to record absolutely everything about a dinner party. "The Social Event". It's the book Hyacinth Bucket has dreamed of for her candle lit suppers. Designed for The Margorie Merryweather Post estate, now the Hillwood Museum in Washington, D.C., the book is filled with wonderful works of art from the house and many pictures of the house and grounds. Yet it is the detail that this book goes into that is exceptional. Taking the book out of the slip case presents a lavish table setting as the end-papers. This is followed by over three dozen full page images from the house and treasures. Opening the individual party pages, it details 17 occasions and planning. Yes, a guest seating and table plan, the menu, the wines but even what music and flowers were used and more. For sure, a reminder what earrings the hostess wore. Plus there are so very practical listings of wines and recipe resources (to tell chef) but also the private number of the plumber if an emergency should occur on the special day. It ends with a recap of expenses (for the tax-man) and even who slurped his soup and may not be invited for the another dinner. This is a book for now, but with a bygone era's style. Perhaps the highest compliment that can be given to the Hostess is when a dish she prepared was so enjoyed that guests want to know how she made it.
The modest, "it was nothing just a bit of this and that popped together", may not be what is being asked for. These cards are a neat concise way of delivering your secret recipe, if you are willing to share.
